Why is Background Screening Important?

Deciding which type of background screening check an employer needs to run can often seem like a daunting task. In reality, background screening helps to ensure that the right people are in the right role. From employment verification to criminal record checks, it’s a proactive way to add a layer of risk mitigation into a company’s hiring process. When creating a background screening policy for your company, there are many things to contemplate from deciding the policy’s overall purpose to making sure your program is compliant with federal, provincial and sector-specific laws. Having a process in place to request, receive and evaluate background checks will allow you to better defend your screening program.

Mark Sward, Director of Privacy at Sterling Talent Solutions, shared why background screening is important, the types of background screening and the importance of creating a background screening policy for your organization in a recent issue of Canadian HR Reporter.
